The Pallu (the decorative end of the saree) is where the Chhipa artisans of Bagru showcase their most intricate work. Often featuring a large Jaal or beautiful floral Butas, the pallu deserves to be the star of the show.
If you are tired of the standard Nivi drape, here are three regional drapes that allow your Bagru pallu to shine.
1. The Seedha Pallu (Gujarati Style)
In this style, the pallu is brought from the back over the right shoulder and spread across the chest. This is the best drape for Bagru sarees with heavy, ornate end-pieces. It puts the craftsmanship front and center, making it look like a beautiful hand-printed tapestry.
2. The Bengali Drape (Atpoure)
The Bengali drape features two large pleats and a pallu that is wrapped around the body and thrown over the shoulder twice. This creates a boxy, regal look. Because Bagru cotton is crisp, it holds the structure of the Bengali drape perfectly, highlighting the geometric borders of the saree.
3. The Coorgi Drape
Originating from Karnataka, this drape involves pleats at the back rather than the front. The pallu is wrapped across the chest and tucked over the shoulder. This is a highly functional drape that allows for easy movement while showing off the block prints on the back and shoulders.
4. The Front-Flow Drape
A modern variation where the pallu is not pinned but allowed to hang loose over the front of the shoulder, cascading down. This is perfect for Bagru sarees with “tassels” or “pom-poms” on the edge, adding a playful, bohemian touch to your look.
